Julian Myers is an art historian and editor based in Los Angeles.

A scholar of postwar and contemporary art, curatorial practice and the history of exhibitions, and the dynamics of group-work and subcultural scenes, Myers’s essays have appeared in exhibition catalogues, academic journals, and art magazines, including Afterall, Artforum, Art Journal, Documents, Fillip, Frieze, October, and many other venues.

From 2003–20, Myers was faculty in the Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice at California College of the Arts, teaching contemporary art history, exhibition history, writing, advising over one hundred master’s theses and several of the program’s innovative and widely recognized research-based graduate exhibitions, and co-editing several of the program’s best exhibition catalogues, including Artwork for Bedrooms: San Francisco 2002–08, Black Light, Give Them the Picture: An Anthology of La Mammelle and ART COM, 1975–84, HSz: As Is / As If, My Trip to America by Martin Wong, The Ninth Page: Etel Adnan’s Journalism, 1972–74.

Since the late 2010s, Myers has also worked as an independent editor, researcher, and project manager, including several issues of The Exhibitionist, a journal of exhibition making (and the doorstop omnibus of the journal’s run, The Exhibitionist: The First Six Years); an edited volume of writings by the groundbreaking Slovenian curator and museum director Zdenka Badovinac, Comradeship: Art, Curating and Politics in Post-Socialist Europe; exhibition catalogues for the artists Alex Da Corte, Candice Lin, Rosemary Mayer, and Robert Motherwell, and survey exhibitions including Surrealism and Us: Caribbean and African Diasporic Artists Since 1940. Myers’s practice also includes research, writing, and sourcing for the wild art-circus Luna Luna; various projects by Helen Molesworth and Peter Doig; revising style guides, gallery mediation, and educator guides for university museums and art centers; and much more.

Since 2011, Myers has occasionally worked with Joanna Szupinska in the critical and curatorial collaboration grupa o.k. They have produced ambitious projects for San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Muzeum Sztuki, Łódź, Poland; the essay-review “Goodbye Auteur,” published in Art Journal in 2019; and a 2022 conversation for October’s series Art Communities in Crisis.
